Notable omissions from the contract list include former captain Angelo Mathews, Dhanushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis and Niroshan Dickwella. While Mathews is unavailable for selection, three others are serving suspensions for violating COVID-19 protocols.

Entering the tournament with just three T20Is to his name, the classy left-hander is fifth with 231 runs.

According to Arnold, the 24-year-old has played in all three formats for Sri Lanka in 2021 and has a long future in the national team.

“He’s just a good player. He’s not a slugger. He throws well, he runs well,” Arnold said.

“A lot of players come out these days and run hard with heavy bats, but this guy plays shots. That’s why we’re so excited. That’s why we’re looking for him in all three formats.”

Due to his success in 2021, Asalanka has been promoted to vice-captain for the tour, a move Arnold feels is right.

“He was the Sri Lanka Under-19 captain and he is such a player and person,” he added.
