Do you remember cricket 2007? Yes, the cricket game that was (and still is) readily available online and playable on any computer? It’s been 14 years and I still think it’s the standard for cricket. It had the best graphics of its time, had a fun gameplay experience, and was easy to master. After 12 years, it was Big Ants Studio’s Cricket 19 that kept the dream alive for sports fans. So when I got my hands on a copy of Cricket 22, my expectations were at an all-time high.

You may have already sensed the disappointment in my tone. Because after waiting two years, it’s only to be expected a game that makes the old person look, well, old! But alas, I still found myself spending more time on Cricket 19 than the new one. On paper, there’s a lot that Big Ants Studio got right and for cricket fans, borrowing at least an hour of their daily lives on PC or console is enough.

But even more disturbing is the commentary which seems to have nothing to do with what is happening on the ground, and can only be described as frustrating.

Cricket 19 itself was not a great game and Cricket 22 makes it look even worse. It appears that Big Ants Studio has simply increased the color saturation between stadiums, players and stadiums, with no real update to the textures themselves. Player models look comparable to what we saw in FIFA 18/19; There are no sweat or jersey animations you see in football games. The pitches look cartoonish and the pitch section, as well as everything else behind it, looks from the EA Sports Cricket 07 era. I am equally happy and sad to see Cricket 22, happy that Big Ants Studio only serves cricket fans worldwide when the big shots give up. But looking at the rest of the game, it hurts to see that Cricket 22 isn’t a huge upgrade over the previous version, which, by the way, looks like a better option in 2021; More than that since Big Ants asked $3,999 for it.
